Dragon Boat Festival: Commemorating Qu Yuan

The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival is an amazing and breathtaking festival that held in China. It is a significant holiday celebration that offers wonderful experience to the people who becomes a part of it. The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival is the one that offers longest history. As per the name, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated by keeping races on boat and that too in the shape of dragons. This festival is very exciting and luring as you can see various boats rushing to get first on water.


It is a competition where all the competing boats row ahead to reach to the finish end. People simply enjoy rowing and drumbeat racing, which are the traditional customs started in attempts to save the patriotic poet Chu Yuan. You can see people throwing bamboo leaves into the water that remains filled with cooked rice. This was done so that the fish could eat them instead of the hero poet who drowned on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month during the 277 BC. Later, it has been turned into the custom of eating tzungtzu and rice dumplings.

The Dragon Boat Festival is been celebrated in belief that it protects everyone from the evil and disease for the entire year. The festival and belief is done by various practices like hanging healthy herbs on the front door, displaying portraits of evil’s nemesis, and drinking nutritious concoctions. It is also believed that if a person manages to stand with the egg on its end sharp at 12.00 noon, then the following year will be lucky. Well, the Dragon Boat Festival is very popular in the entire world and normally held at various cities in various countries.

You can see right at the first of the boat, a man sits and plays the drum and the rest of the people enjoys rowing, struggling to reach to the end first. They get hungry to come first in the competition and this enthusiasm makes everyone fascinated. All you can say is celebrated because of Qu Yuan. People commemorate him through the Dragon Boat Festival by eating zong zi, and many other activities on the anniversary of his death, which is the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.

The Dragon Boat races are the most exciting part of the festival that draws crowds of spectators. The boats could be found brightly painted and decorated canoes. The length of the boats ranges anywhere from 40 feet to 100 feet and the heads of the boat are shaped like open mouthed dragons. The sterns get end with a scaly tail.
